Area of Concentration: Minimizing Risks and Mitigating Natural Disasters in the Amazon

The Master‘s in Risk and Natural Disaster Management in the Amazon will focus on studies to minimize risks and minimize natural disasters. Therefore, the graduate student will have knowledge of the hydrometeorological systems that cause natural disasters in the Amazon and the methodologies for analyzing social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities. Thus, the graduate will be able to formulate and / or use methodologies for the monitoring and forecasting of these threats and to define civil defense actions for areas of high risk of disaster occurrences.

Natural Threats in the Amazon Environment

The study of the “threat” variable aims to identify and characterize the adverse events and events that may occur in a given region or scenario, enabling the study of the degree of vulnerability of the receiving bodies and systems, the assessment, the ranking of the risks of disasters and the definition of the areas of greatest risk. The study of disaster threats is inserted in the context of Disaster Risk Assessment, which, in turn, is one of the main axes of the global aspect of Disaster Prevention.

Vulnerability of Populations in Risk Areas

Vulnerability implies the degree of loss for a given element or group within an area affected by a process. Natural hazards involve the different approaches historically used in the study of risk (risk perception, risk and culture, risk analysis, events and environmental systems). In this context, the study of vulnerabilities is approached from a theoretical- conceptual, focusing on its epistemological meanings, as well as the most significant points of the different approaches.
